What is an HSN code?
HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) classifies goods using a globally standardised structure: the first 2 digits identify the chapter (e.g. 09 = coffee, tea), the next 2 the heading (0902 = tea), and further digits narrow to the exact product. India extends the international 6-digit code to 8 digits.
What is a SAC code?
SAC (Services Accounting Code) does the same for services. Every SAC starts with 99 — for example 9954 covers construction and 9963 covers food and beverage serving, such as restaurants. Use the Services tab above to browse them.
How many digits do you need on invoices?
| Annual aggregate turnover | Minimum HSN digits (B2B) |
|---|---|
| Up to ₹5 crore | 4 digits |
| Above ₹5 crore | 6 digits |

Frequently asked questions
What is an HSN code?
HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) is an internationally standardised 6-digit code that classifies every tradable good. India uses it on GST invoices and returns, extended to 8 digits for greater precision. Every product you sell has one HSN code.
What is a SAC code?
SAC (Services Accounting Code) is the services equivalent of HSN. Every service you provide — construction, consultancy, transport, renting — is classified under a SAC code that begins with 99.
How many digits of the HSN code must I quote on invoices?
It depends on turnover. Businesses with annual aggregate turnover up to ₹5 crore must quote at least a 4-digit HSN on B2B invoices; businesses above ₹5 crore must quote at least 6 digits. Optional 8-digit quoting applies to exports and some other cases. Rules change over budget cycles, so confirm the current requirement on gst.gov.in.
Where do I report HSN-wise summaries in my returns?
In GSTR-1, HSN-wise summary of outward supplies goes in Table 12. If you use GSTSelf to prepare GSTR-1, the summary is generated from your invoices automatically — this finder just helps you pick the right code in the first place.
